What does it mean when a partner becomes a trigger?

A ‘trigger’ is a trigger – something that evokes a strong emotional response.
For people with an Borderline Personality Disorder (BPS) This can be, for example:

A certain tone of voice (‘You're so sensitive again’)

Ignorance or Silence in Dispute

Changes in proximity or attention (‘Why did you write less yesterday?’)

Criticism, even if it is objective

For Narcissistic personality traits or one Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPS) Other things act as triggers:

Perceived insults or rejections

Loss of control or admiration

Situations where one’s own image is threatened (‘I am not good enough’ → anger or withdrawal)

Criticism that attacks self-esteem

Both disorders – borderline and narcissism – have one thing in common:
Respond to emotional insecurity overcompensation.
While borderline sufferers are afraid of being abandoned, narcissists fear losing their superiority or control.
They both feel fast in crisis. fainted – and this powerlessness often manifests itself in communication patterns that hurt the partner.

2. When two trigger systems meet

A typical example:

Example 1:
Anna (Borderline) doesn't feel seen by Tom (with narcissistic features). She writes to him:
“You never contact me on your own, I don’t care.”
Tom reacts coolly: “Always this drama, I have a life too.”

Anna feels rejected → withdraws or cries → Tom feels this as manipulation → reacts with defense or mockery.

A cycle is created.

Both partners see the other as the ‘trigger’.
In fact, they are both triggered – only in different ways.

Anna through Feeling of emotional distance

Tom through Feelings of constriction or criticism

So the key is Not in the behavior itself, but in the internal importance, which each partner gives to this behavior.

3. The most common communication traps

a) Defense instead of understanding

When someone hears criticism, they often react immediately with justification (‘I didn't do anything!’).
This makes the other person feel rejected – and louder, more emotional or more accusatory.

→ Better: Be aware of the emotional content before reacting.
Example:
“You're right, it may have come across as distant. I didn't mean to hurt you.’

b) Silence as Protection

Many are withdrawing to avoid dispute. For Borderliners, however, silence can seem like an emotional death knell.
It is perceived as a rejection, not an attempt at reassurance.

→ Alternative: Verbal silence
Example:
“I see that I am just overwhelmed. I need a 30-minute break, so we can keep talking.”

c) Emotional retaliation

If one was injured, he reacts with the same coin:
“You were cold – now I am too!”
This is how the spiral escalates.

→ Better: Injury name, not mirror.
Example:
“I was hurt when you withdrew. I need closeness, not distance.”

4. Why communication with borderline or narcissistic partners is so difficult

Both disorders change perception in social interactions.
A sentence can be understood in completely different ways, depending on the ‘filter’ through which it is heard.

Situation

Borderline filter

Narcissism filter

Partner is still

"He hates me, he doesn't care about me"

“I'm annoyed, he wants to control me”

critique

“I am bad, not adorable”

‘How dare he criticise me?’

retreating

"I'm Abandoned"

“I need control, otherwise I will lose myself”

This means:
The same sentence can cause completely different emotional explosions in two people.
Those who understand this can better classify conflicts – and communicate in a more targeted way.

5. The Art of De-escalation: Step-by-step

Step 1: Detect triggers

Everyone should know: What brings me out of balance?
→ Example: ‘If you don’t answer me, I feel worthless.’

Step 2: Tell triggers

Make it clear to your partner what is happening to you – without blaming them.
→ ‘If you withdraw, it makes me unsure. Can you tell us a little bit when you need time?’

Step 3: Taking responsibility

Acknowledge that your feeling yours is – the partner triggers it, but does not cause it intentionally.
→ ‘I know this is my old pattern. I am working on it.”

Step 4: I-messages instead of you-attack

‘You're always so cold’ → Attack
“I feel alone when you get quiet” → Need

Step 5: Allow for breaks

In heated moments, no argument helps.
→ Agrees a code word such as ‘Stop’ or ‘Reset’ to take a breath.

6. Practical communication aids in conflict situations

a) The "three-minute principle"

Both may maximum 3 minutes Speaking in one go – without interruption.
The other person then briefly repeats what he has understood.
→ So the focus remains on understanding, not on victory.

b) The “protocol meeting”

Helpful for couples with impulsivity or forgetfulness:
You write along punctually during the conversation.
→ This prevents someone from saying afterwards: “I never said that!”

c) Instead of being right: Feeling seen

Many discussions are not about facts, but about Feelings of value, closeness or control.
→ Example:
“I know you didn't mean anything bad to me. But it reminded me of something old.”

d) Practicing self-regulation

When you feel your pulse rising:

Run cold water over your hand

Breathe deeply for 10 seconds

phrase such as: Repeat "I am in the here and now"
→ First after Speaking.

7. When both sides are injured

In relationships between borderline and narcissistic proportions, a Emotional interaction:
One seeks closeness, the other distance.
One wants security, the other wants control.

→ Example 2:

Lisa (Borderline): “Why did you read my message but did not reply?”
Mark (narcissistic): ‘Because I have no desire to constantly justify myself.’

Lisa is crying, Mark is leaving. Both feel misunderstood.

This does not help to blame, but Understanding of the different perceptions:

Lisa needs emotional reassurance.

Mark needs space to maintain autonomy.

One solution can be:

“I see that you just need some distance. Please tell me when you want to speak again – this will help me not to panic.”

8. Realistic expectations

No one can be permanent trigger-free Communicate.
The goal is not, Never having to fight again, but Faster Return to Connection to find.

Communication is not talent, it is training.

Emotional security is not created by perfection, but by repetition of respect.

Sentence to take away:
“We are two injured people trying not to hurt each other in the same places.”

9. When Professional Help Makes Sense

If conflicts are constantly escalating, blame is consolidated, or violence (verbal or physical) occurs, couples therapy or individual therapy is highly advisable.

Forms of assistance:

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) at Borderline

Schematic therapy or Behavioral therapy for narcissistic patterns

Couple counseling with focus on emotion regulation

Sometimes a neutral third party is enough to defuse the dynamics.

10.
