Granular synthesis: A comprehensive explanation

‘Granular synthesis breaks down sounds into tiny fragments that are reassembled and modified. This technique enables unique and complex soundscapes for music production and sound design.”

1. introduction

Granular synthesis is a technique of sound synthesis in which sounds are broken down into smallest units, so-called ‘grains’. These tiny sound fragments, often only a few milliseconds long, can be combined, modified and reassembled in various ways to create novel sound textures. Manipulation of the size, duration, frequency and density of these granules can create a wide range of sounds – from natural sound structures to abstract, unpredictable soundscapes.

In modern music production, especially in electronic music and experimental sound design, granular synthesis has established itself as an integral part. This text sheds light on the history and development of this synthesis technique, its current application, typical parameters and examples as well as common hardware and software solutions.

Additive synthesis: An introduction to theory, practice and history

Additive synthesis combines simple sine waves into complex sounds. Discover how frequencies, amplitudes and phases create unique sounds in music production!

Additive synthesis is one of the basic methods of sound synthesis used in music production and sound design. It makes it possible to create sounds by adding harmonic partial tones and is widely used in both the software and hardware world of electronic music production. This blog post provides a comprehensive introduction to additive synthesis, the story behind it, typical settings, and shows various software and hardware options that use this technique.

Sample Podcast 31 Synthesis Forms and Sound Synthesis - Making Sounds (Part 1)

Today it is about synthesis shaping and sound synthesis, we go to the first three one from a list of methods for sound shaping with synthesizer.

Topics:
  • NEW: Moog Model 10 reissued for 13990€,
  • NEW: Ableton Live 11.2 Minor Update with more Apple M1 support for AUv3 plugins and improved Standard Reverb plugin.
  • Yamaha MODX+
  • Other topics: Synthesis forms – what are ´s and how to use them for what
  • Synth Lobhudelei: I would praise the Pioneer Toraiz AS-1 over the clover
NRWision says:

Sound synthesis creates different sounds or connects them to something new. This happens with synthesizers. The podcasters ‘Notstrom’ and Sascha Markmann alias ‘Raumwelle’ explain the different forms of synthesis that exist. These sounds are produced, for example, with an analog synthesizer. This combines different current frequencies and signal noises. In the meantime, digital software is also taking over this task. In the beginning is the sound of an oscillator. ‘Oscillating’ means ‘swinging’. Together, ‘emergency current’ and ‘space wave’ explain what an oscillator is and how to change a sound with an envelope. In the ‘Probe Podcast’, ‘Emergency Stream’ and ‘Space Wave’ also bring up-to-date news from the world of music production. Among other things, the technology company ‘Apple’ raises prices in its ‘App Store’ by up to 30 percent. And: The music software “Ableton” gets an important update.
