1. introduction
Granular synthesis is a technique of sound synthesis in which sounds are broken down into smallest units, so-called ‘grains’. These tiny sound fragments, often only a few milliseconds long, can be combined, modified and reassembled in various ways to create novel sound textures. Manipulation of the size, duration, frequency and density of these granules can create a wide range of sounds – from natural sound structures to abstract, unpredictable soundscapes.
In modern music production, especially in electronic music and experimental sound design, granular synthesis has established itself as an integral part. This text sheds light on the history and development of this synthesis technique, its current application, typical parameters and examples as well as common hardware and software solutions.
